The Price of Courage: How Mohamed Jalloh was forced to flee after standing up against Kush

On July 12, 2025, the city of Makeni woke up to the echo of hope. At the heart of that hope was a young man named Mohamed Jalloh, a fearless youth who could no longer stand by as the deadly Kush drug continued to destroy the lives of his peers.

Jalloh, driven by grief, anger, and compassion, had watched too many young men waste away, and some were even friends with shared dreams and potential. He decided it was time to act. And with a few brave volunteers, he organized a peaceful “Call to Action” protest — a rally to urge authorities to crack down on drug dealers and save the youth from the growing Kush epidemic.

At first, it was a march filled with chants for change and calls for justice. Placards read “Save Our Youth, Stop Kush Now!” and “Our Future Is Dying.” But the peace did not last.

Reports say the protest was infiltrated by drug dealers, the very people Jalloh was standing up against. What began as a peaceful cry for help quickly turned into chaos. Stones flew, clashes erupted, and within minutes, violence engulfed the streets. By the time the dust settled, a few protesters lay dead, and the police were left shaken and angry.

For Jalloh, everything changed that day. The young man who had spoken for the voiceless suddenly became a man on the run, hunted by two powerful forces: the drug cartels, who wanted to silence him for exposing their trade, and the police, who accused him of organizing an illegal protest without official clearance.

Fearing for his life, Mohamed fled across the border into Guinea. That was the last time anyone saw him.

Since then, his friends and family have lived in silence and worry, wondering whether he is alive or dead. His mother, according to those close to her, still keeps his photo on the wall, a reminder of the son who risked everything for others.

Mohamed Jalloh’s story is not just about one man’s disappearance. It is a story about the price of courage in a country where speaking up can cost you everything. It is about a young man who refused to stay silent while an entire generation was being destroyed by Kush, and it is about a society that must decide whether it will remember him as a troublemaker or as a hero.

Because even in his absence, Mohamed’s voice still echoes — in every mother’s cry for her addicted child, in every youth who dreams of freedom from the grip of drugs.

His message was simple: “We cannot stay silent while Kush kills our future.” And though he is gone, that message lives on.
