Sierra Leone’s Auditor-General Abdul Aziz has been elected to serve as an individual member representative on the board of directors of the International Consortium on Governmental Financial Management (ICGFM), a global body dedicated to strengthening public financial management systems worldwide.
In an official correspondence sent to Abdul Aziz this month, the ICGFM board described the appointment as a recognition of his professional standing and contributions to public sector financial management. They noted that this achievement reflects his more than 30-year experience in public sector auditing and financial oversight.
ICGFM is an internationally recognised organisation headquartered in the United States, established to promote transparent, accountable, and effective public financial management (PFM). The consortium brings together government officials, academics, and private sector practitioners from across the world, providing a platform to address emerging challenges in public policy and finance. Its conferences, often held in Washington, D.C., focus on critical issues such as digital transformation in PFM, public debt management, fiscal accountability, and governance reforms.
Over the years, Aziz has been an active and consistent participant in ICGFM conferences, where his technical contributions and policy insights have reportedly earned him strong professional respect within the global PFM community.
According to sources familiar with the process, his sustained engagement and “impactful, forward-looking contributions” at international forums played a key role in building confidence among board members, ultimately leading to his election.
The appointment is expected to have broader national benefits, according to officials at the country’s supreme audit institution, Audit Service Sierra Leone. They noted that Sierra Leone’s representation at board level within a global PFM institution like this could expand access to professional networks, training opportunities, and policy innovations for local public finance practitioners. It may also help strengthen the country’s ongoing efforts to improve fiscal discipline, accountability, and value for money in the management of public resources.
Mr. Aziz’s election is being viewed as both a personal achievement and a boost to Sierra Leone’s profile within the global public financial management community.
