At a time when many Sierra Leoneans are demanding credible, principled, and forward-looking leadership, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura is steadily emerging as one of the most notable figures in the country’s political space. Known for his strong academic background, commitment to peace, and consistent loyalty to the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Bangura represents a new generation of leadership built on ideas, integrity, and service.
Born into a politically active APC family, Dr. Bangura was introduced early to the values of public service, discipline, and national duty. However, instead of relying on political connections, he chose a path grounded in education and merit. He earned a PhD in Economics in Germany, along with advanced degrees in International Development and Gender Studies. This strong academic foundation has shaped his views on inclusive growth, social justice, and sustainable development.
Dr. Bangura currently serves as an Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. In this role, he has contributed to training young Sierra Leoneans in conflict resolution, democratic governance, and nation-building. His work bridges theory and practice, ensuring that global ideas are adapted to local realities.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Bangura has built an impressive record at the international level. He has worked with respected institutions such as the United Nations (UN), ECOWAS, and the African Union (AU), supporting peacebuilding, governance reforms, and development programmes across Africa. His selection as an Afox Fellow at the University of Oxford further highlights his international recognition and leadership capacity.
Within the APC, Dr. Bangura is widely seen as a loyal and consistent party man. He founded the APC Students Association at Fourah Bay College, helping to mobilize young people and promote political awareness. Over the years, he has remained active in party affairs, focusing on youth empowerment, civic education, and strengthening party structures. Notably, he has never held government office, a factor many see as an advantage in a political climate shaped by public mistrust and past controversies.
Dr. Bangura’s vision for Sierra Leone centers on national unity, inclusive governance, youth empowerment, and economic transformation driven by knowledge and integrity. He believes that sustainable development must be built on strong institutions, ethical leadership, and an informed citizenry. His involvement in voter education campaigns and the nationwide anti-drug campaign against Kush reflects a commitment to addressing both democratic and social challenges facing the country.
As Sierra Leone’s political landscape continues to evolve, many within and outside the APC view Dr. Ibrahim Bangura as a symbol of renewal and hope. With his blend of academic excellence, international experience, and grassroots engagement, he is increasingly seen as a leader capable of helping guide the country toward stability, accountability, and shared prosperity.
