The Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), Lansana Dumbuya Esq., has been released from police custody following an overnight detention at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Freetown.
Mr. Dumbuya was questioned in connection with remarks made during a recent APC rally at Atouga Stadium, where he led chants critical of President Julius Maada Bio, accusing him of “stealing the 2023 elections.”
As of the time of his release, the Sierra Leone Police had not announced any formal charges, and the conditions under which he was released were not publicly disclosed.
Earlier in the day, APC parliamentarians said they were suspending their participation in parliamentary proceedings, demanding the unconditional release of their party’s secretary general.
In a statement issued yesterday, lawyer Dumbuya defended his remarks, maintaining that they were made within the bounds of political expression and freedom of speech.
The development comes amid ongoing political tensions between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition APC, with calls from various quarters for restraint and adherence to democratic principles.
