UN Celebrates IYD with Focus on Digital Empowerment

By Ellen Samura

Celebrated annually on August 12th, International Youth Day (IYD) recognizes the potential, achievements, and contributions of young people globally. It serves as a reminder to governments and development partners of their responsibility to foster environments where youth can flourish. Today’s youth, at the forefront of change across all societal sectors, are driving digital innovation and championing social progress.

In Sierra Leone, the UN marked IYD by convening a high-level forum of stakeholders, including government ministries, youth groups, and UN representatives. The forum centered on the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” aiming to empower Sierra Leonean youth to realize their full potential in the digital age.

Youth Minister Mohamed O. Bangura emphasized the role of youth as custodians of the nation’s peace and security. He highlighted initiatives such as engaging influential TikTok users to promote national cohesion, and the development of a comprehensive Status of the Youth Report. Additionally, he mentioned a $1.5 million World Bank-funded project for a youth intervention center, grants for female-led organizations to combat sexual violence, and a UNDP-supported initiative to provide 200 tricycles to young people.

Minister Bangura concluded by encouraging youth to harness digital spaces for progress, utilizing technology to drive positive change and contribute to sustainable development within their communities.
