The government security forces in Sierra Leone have seized a large consignment of bomb-making materials and illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $94 million during an intelligence-led operation in the western area, the government said on Friday. The operation resulted in the arrest of seven suspects namely: Hussein Antar, Jamal Antar, Ibrahim Bashiru Kamara, Samuel Marah, Abdul Aziz Kamara, Alieu Kamara, and Ackmed Bangura.
The raids, which took place on the 7th and 9th of July 2024, led to the discovery of various bomb-making materials, including gas cylinders, TNT, detonators, firing devices, timers, and other components disguised as household items. Additionally, a large quantity of Captagon pills, a dangerous amphetamine-type stimulant, was found hidden in refrigerators and air conditioners at the residence of one of the suspects.
According to the government, Captagon is known to be widely used by ISIS and fighters in Syria and is considered a major threat to regional security.
Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and there is no need for panic. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
This operation is a significant success in the fight against insecurity and drug trafficking in Sierra Leone. It demonstrates the effectiveness of the country’s security forces and their commitment to protecting the safety of the citizens.
