Nigeria customs intercepts $20m cocaine shipment from Sierra Leone

Nigeria local media have reported that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Port and Terminal Multiservices Ltd. (PTML) command has intercepted a massive cocaine shipment originating from Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The seizure, valued at ₦29.4 billion (approximately $20.4 million based on the current exchange rate), was announced yesterday by the command controller, Joe Anani, during a press briefing in Lagos.

The interception occurred after the PTML terminal operator flagged suspicious packages inside a 20-foot empty container (numbered GCNU1332851) that had arrived from Freetown. The container was flagged on October 7 during a routine disinfection exercise.

Anani confirmed that inspection uncovered 50 packages containing 20 parcels each, which rapid tests positively identified as cocaine. The total weight of the illicit substance was 1,000 kilograms, or one tonne
