Following the June 2023 elections, the APC party has raised concerns about the credibility and outcome of the polls, citing irregularities. This led to a mediated settlement between the ruling government and the opposition, resulting in the Agreement for National Unity. One of the key resolutions of this agreement is the establishment of a tripartite electoral review committee, tasked with reviewing the 2023 electoral cycle and proposing recommendations for electoral reforms. However, some questions remain regarding the committee’s mandate and access to the election data held by ECSL.
It is important to note that the committee does not have the authority to annul elections or order a rerun, as these powers lie with the Judiciary and the Supreme Court. Any assertions that the committee will annul the elections or recommend a rerun are misleading. While the committee is not a judicial body, it has a crucial role in examining the election results and identifying any discrepancies or irregularities which may have compromised the integrity of the outcome. This examination includes reviewing the results announced by ECSL for the 2023, 2018, 2012, and 2007 elections.
To carry out a thorough review, access to the election data is necessary. It is vital for transparency, accountability, and rebuilding trust in the electoral management systems. The availability of data will strengthen the credibility of the election results. The government, as a signatory to the Agreement for National Unity, should not be seen impeding access to the results which ushered them into power.
