Fourah Bay College (FBC), with a history spanning nearly two centuries, has achieved a significant milestone by launching its inaugural Postgraduate LLM program in Human Rights, Constitutional Law, and Criminal Justice. The program, officially launched on July 10 by Acting Chief Justice Nicholas Browne Marke, aims to broaden access to legal education in Sierra Leone.
The LLM program is open to both lawyers and non-lawyers, recognizing the need for legal knowledge across various professions. The curriculum, designed to equip students with essential legal skills, will span two years and include both taught and research components. Classes will be offered in the evening hours and virtually, accommodating diverse schedules.
The program has already garnered significant interest, with over 50 students shortlisted for the first cohort. This diverse group includes lawyers, judges, politicians, journalists, and civil rights activists. The LLM program received full accreditation from the Tertiary Education Commission and approval from the University Senate.
The successful launch of this program marks a new chapter in Fourah Bay College’s commitment to providing comprehensive legal education. With plans to introduce additional LLM programs in the future, the faculty is poised to make a lasting impact on legal education in Sierra Leone.
