Confronting the Kush Problem Head-on: A Necessary Call to Action

We are gravely concerned about the proliferation of Kush in the country and its potential implications for the future of our youth. More so, we are deeply troubled by the fact that governmental authorities mandated by law to tackle issues of substance abuse in the country have failed to confront the Kush problem head-on. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that immediate and decisive action is taken to combat this menace before it is too late.

We believe that the government’s failure to recognise Kush as a national social security threat has created a leeway for the Kush trade to thrive while our most energetic and vibrant population is dying as a consequence. To put an end to this crisis, it is essential that the government takes immediate action to recognize Kush as a national social security threat. Only then can we take the necessary steps to protect our society and guarantee a safe future for all.

We must take proactive steps to ensure that our society is no longer subjected to the ill-effects of Kush, and we must invest in initiatives that will allow us to tackle this issue in a holistic and effective manner. Therefore, we urge the government to recognize the danger that Kush poses to our society’s future – the youth – and to take steps to protect them from its devastating consequences.

We call on the Sierra Leone Police, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and partners, including all other stakeholders, to critically engage and map out workable solutions to eradicate Kush from our society. This is not just a call to action; it is a call for immediate change that will ensure the safety of all Sierra Leoneans.

We further urge these institutions to join hands with the general public to ensure that our communities are free from the threats posed by Kush and other dangerous substances. This must be done urgently, as the devastating effects of Kush are far-reaching and have long-term repercussions on our society. Such decisive action is necessary to ensure a safe and secure environment for all Sierra Leoneans, free from the menace of illicit drugs. And we call on all stakeholders should work together to create awareness and highlight the dangers of Kush and its long-term effects on our society.

We strongly believe that the issue at hand demands immediate intervention of the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic as the urgency and importance of taking decisive actions against the prevalence of Kush in our society cannot be overemphasised. We want President Julius Maada Bio to know that it is high time we confronted the Kush problem head-on. A stitch in time saves nine!
